The Story of Dan Linehan’s

A Journey of Homecoming, Heritage and Irish Hospitality

Contrary to their initial  plan to “retire”, in 1974 Dan and Nora decided to buy O’Meara’s pub on College Street, Killarney. Renaming it Dan Linehan’s, it quickly became a beacon for those seeking the warmth of genuine Irish hospitality. Dan, known to many by his traditional Irish familial nickname “Dan Matty,” revelled in the renewed connections with old friends and welcomed countless visitors from London and beyond.

Nora’s Legendary Hospitality

Nora, the matriarch, infused the upstairs B&B with unmatched kindness and warmth. Her hospitality was legendary – guests still fondly recall the time she offered her own house to honeymooners, ensuring their stay was as magical as their new journey together.

The Business Blooms

Dan Linehan’s blossomed into a bustling hub, much to Dan and Nora’s amusement and pride. So much for slowing down!

A Seamless Transition of Leadership

As the year’s passed, the mantle of leadership gracefully transitioned within the family. When Nora’s health began to wane, their youngest daughter, Rita, stepped forward, seamlessly integrating into the fabric of the business. Her dedication ensured that the legacy not only continued but flourished.

The Backbone of the Team

In 1992, during the reign of Dan and his daughter Rita, Bernard O’Brien from Beaufort joined the team. He quickly became Dan’s right hand man and confident – someone he could really rely on. Professional, organised and great craic, we are proud to say that Bernie remains the backbone of our award-winning team as Bar Manager and a treasured honorary member of the Linehan family!

A New Era Begins With Michael and Hanna

In 1995, after working together for over 10 years, Dan, aged 80, was finally ready to retire and Rita took the opportunity to return to her career as a teacher. The question was, who was going to take over the reins of the family business?

Step up to the plate Dan’s eldest son, Michael. At this point he and his wife Hanna were established publicans in London having gained decades of experience in the industry. But without a second thought, Michael and Hanna packed up their life in London and made the move to Kerry.

The Expanding Business and Michael’s Legacy

The sudden and sad passing of Michael in 2002 at the untimely age of 56, found Hanna alone trying to run the family business. Like her parents before her, their daughter Siobhan immediately booked a one way ticket from London to come and help her mum. This strong mother and daughter team have now been at the helm of Dan Linehan’s for over 22 years, continuing to nurture the family legacy with the same dedication and love that has always been its foundation.
