Killarney has produced many talented people over the years but few have captured the imagination of audiences around the world quite like Jessie Buckley.

Born and raised here in Killarney, Jessie’s journey from local productions to the global Hollywood stage is something the town has followed with enormous pride.

Like many young people growing up in Kerry, Jessie’s early years were filled with music, creativity and community. Jessie’s mum Marina is a well known singer and harpist in town. Jessie became involved in musical theatre and performance from a young age, quickly showing the talent and determination that would eventually take her far beyond Killarney.

Breakthrough

Her breakthrough came when she appeared on the BBC talent series I’d Do Anything, where audiences first saw her remarkable voice and stage presence. From there, Jessie went on to train at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, one of the world’s leading acting schools.

What followed has been an extraordinary career.

Over the past few years, Jessie has starred in a remarkable range of West End theatre, film and television productions, including acclaimed series Chernobyl and films such as The Lost Daughter, which earned her an Academy Award nomination and international recognition.

Whether she is walking a red carpet in Hollywood or performing on stage in London or New York, she will always be one of Killarney’s own.

And that’s something this town is very proud of.
